About Sri Avani Sringeri shankar mutt
The “Sri Sri Avani Sringeri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Mahasamsthanam,” also known as “Sri Sharada Peetham, Avani” or “Avani Mutt,” has a deep-rooted cultural and religious heritage, existing for several centuries. Based on the teachings of Sri Adi Shankaracharya, the Mutt was enshrined by Sri Sri Nrusimha Bharathi Swamiji, the 14th Pontiff of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, at Avani Village, Mulabagal Taluk, Kolar District, Karnataka, India.
Historical Background
The Mutt’s foundation is linked to the teachings of Sri Adi Shankaracharya, a key figure in Indian philosophy who promoted Advaita Vedanta.
– Sri Sri Nrusimha Bharathi Swamiji, the 14th Pontiff of Sringeri Sharada Peetham, played a pivotal role in establishing the Mutt at Avani after an extensive Padayatra to various pilgrimage sites.
– Due to long-term travels and communication difficulties, another saint was enthroned at Sringeri during Swamiji’s absence. Upon his return, Sri Nrusimha Bharathi Swamiji was pleased with the developments and continued his spiritual journey, eventually settling at Avani.
– At Avani, Sri Nrusimha Bharathi Swamiji recognised the sanctity of the location and established the religious institution that is now known as “Sri Sri Avani Sringeri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Mahasamsthanam” or “Avani Mutt.”
Historical Recognition
The existence of the Mutt dates back to the year 1104, as documented by the Archaeological Survey Department of Mysore in 1929. The Mutt continued to flourish through various historical periods, including the Moghul Reign, receiving patronage and respect from the kings and rulers of South India.
Founding and Establishment
The Mutt was founded by His Holiness Shri Shri Nrusimha Bharathi Swamiji, the 14th Pontiff of Sringeri Sharada Peetam. During his spiritual journey, known as “Padayatra,” Swamiji travelled to various pilgrimage sites, spreading the teachings of Sri Adi Shankaracharya. After a prolonged absence of over 12 years, due to a lack of communication and transportation facilities, a new Pontiff was appointed at Sringeri as per Vedic rituals. Upon his return, Shri Shri Nrusimha Bharathi Swamiji expressed his satisfaction with the succession and continued his pilgrimage, ultimately arriving at Avani, a serene and sacred village in Karnataka.

Establishment of Avani Mutt
Captivated by the spiritual aura of Avani, Shri Shri Nrusimha Bharathi Swamiji established the Sri Sri Avani Sringeri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Mahasamsthanam along with his disciples and followers. The Mutt was created to serve society, promoting the values of “Serving People of Society is equal to Serving God.” Over the centuries, the Mutt has become a centre for spiritual, social, and charitable activities, following the traditions laid down by ancient Rishis and Saints.
Spiritual Leadership and Growth
The Mahasamsthanam has been led by a succession of 22 Jagadgurus, each contributing to its spiritual and cultural enrichment. The 22nd Pontiff, Jagadguru Sri Sri Abhinava Vidyashankara Bharathi MahaSwamigal, who managed the Mutt’s activities, attained Brahmaikya (the ultimate union with the divine) in August 2020. His passing created a leadership vacuum, reminiscent of the situation in 1986 when his predecessor, Pontiff Sri Sachidananda Sharma, was appointed with the approval of the Karnataka Government.
Modern Contributions
Today, the Mutt continues its mission under the supervision of its Pontiffs, who oversee the spiritual, social, and charitable activities. The Mutt’s influence has expanded significantly, touching the lives of people from all walks of life. The institution’s growth is supported by donations and contributions from devotees, as well as income from its assets, including a branch established in Bengaluru.
